In the heart of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His being was untarnished, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was to care for his flock of sheep.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the breezes through the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant website co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.

Yet, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.

Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.

One day he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but found no wolf.

The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. But, one noon, a real wolf did attack the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
